Objective
Master the 6 core neutrals, learn to mix textures, and use one small accent to elevate your entire look.
Stage 1
Most people think neutral clothes are just safe or boring. In styling, a neutral is actually your strongest tool. It acts as a blank canvas that instantly makes you look polished.
Stage 2
There are only 6 true neutrals you need to care about: black, white, grey, beige, camel, and navy blue. Here is the ultimate styling rule: every single one of these 6 colors matches perfectly with the others. You literally cannot mess this up.
Stage 3
Open your closet right now and find two items in any of the Core 6 neutral colors. Pick a top in one neutral and a bottom in a different neutral. Lay them out together on your bed.
Stage 4
A full neutral outfit only fails when it looks flat. The absolute secret to making neutrals look expensive is varying your textures. You must pair a rough or heavy fabric with a smooth or shiny one.
Stage 5
Look at the two neutral items you just laid on your bed. Swap one of them out so you have a harsh contrast in fabrics. Pair a chunky wool sweater with a smooth silk skirt, or rigid denim with a soft cashmere top.
Stage 6
Now that you have a beautifully textured neutral base, it is time to bring it to life. Add exactly one small, brightly colored accessory to the outfit. A red shoe, a green bag, or a colorful silk scarf completely transforms the look.
