The Pattern Mixing Masterclass

In our Black & White class, you learned to use one graphic pattern as an accent. Now, we are leveling up by mixing them together. Pattern mixing is an advanced technique, but it is foolproof if you use a strict safety net.

Before applying the rules, you need a safe starting point. In the fashion world, classic stripes are actually considered a neutral. Because they are so structured and predictable, a striped piece pairs effortlessly with almost any chaotic print.

The first rule of mixing prints is the Shared Color rule. For two different patterns to look good together, they must feature at least one exact same color. This invisible thread is what visually forces the two chaotic pieces to match.

The second rule is the Scale Clash. You must pair a large, oversized pattern with a tiny, micro pattern. If both patterns are the exact same size, they will violently fight for the eye's attention and create a headache.

Let's test the safety net using animal print. Leopard print is a tiny, busy pattern that contains black. Therefore, it perfectly matches a large, thick black-and-white striped sweater, satisfying both the color and scale rules instantly.

When wearing two patterns, keep the absolute rest of your outfit completely silent. Think back to our 60-30-10 ratio class. Let the two patterns take up the 60% and 30% blocks, and use a solid neutral for your final 10% accessories.

Go to your closet and pull out one striped piece. Find a second pattern that shares a color with those stripes, ensure their scales are different, and lay your first mixed-print outfit on the bed!
