Preppy is a school uniform that escaped. Its pieces were assembled on northeastern American campuses and at the boarding schools that fed them across the first half of the twentieth century: the soft-shouldered sack suit and the button-down collar from Brooks Brothers, chinos out of military surplus, the rugby shirt and the tennis sweater taken straight off the field, the loafer adapted from a Norwegian farm shoe. Because it was the everyday clothing of people who already had the place, it doubled as a class marker — which is exactly what The Official Preppy Handbook satirized when it became a bestseller in 1980 and, in the process, sold the whole look to everyone outside it. Ralph Lauren had already begun exporting it; by the 1990s hip-hop had claimed the logos and rebuilt the proportions. The useful thing to remember is where the garments come from: sports with dress codes. They were built to look neat while you move, which is why upkeep matters here more than it does in any other style.
